James Potter Obituary, Death Cause – James M. Potter, who resided in Reading and was 90 years old at the time of his death on March 3, 2023, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his own home. Bessie (Liever), his mother, had passed away, and Abraham Potter, his father, had also passed away. He was their son. It was in Philadelphia that he made his debut. At the time of her death, James Potter was a devoted spouse to his wife, Jean L. (Becker) Potter, and the couple had been married for close to 60 years when she passed away. James received both his undergraduate and legal education from the University of Michigan, where he also earned his law degree.
During his time there, he was inducted into the Order of the Coif and served as a member of the Law Review, both of which were awards given to him in recognition of his exceptional academic success. After that, James completed his education and received a Juris Doctor degree. He served his country with the utmost honor as a first lieutenant in the United States Army Judge Advocate General Corps. He sacrificed everything he had for his country. James was one of the founding partners of the law firm Liever, Hyman & Potter in Reading.
He worked there as a lawyer until he retired at the age of 82, at which point he became a partner in the firm’s firm. He was a well-known and active part of the local legal community, having served as President of the Berks County Bar Association in 1985 in addition to being a member of the Civil Rules Committee. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He enjoyed a high level of esteem. James filled his spare time with activities such as golfing and listening to jazz.
Amy Dietrich, who is married to Randy and resides in Exeter, and Leslie Kaltenbach, who is married to Rich and lives in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, are James’ children. James is survived by his wife Jean, as well as his daughters Amy Dietrich and Leslie Kaltenbach. Among those who are still with us now are his grandchildren Charlotte, Sophie, and Mathis Kaltenbach, as well as his granddaughter Elizabeth and her daughter Kathryn Buniski. James Potter’s sister Lillian Potter passed dead before her brother. She was the person who took her place immediately.
