After graduating from Wichita North High School in 1949, Barbara went on to receive her degrees from Kansas State University and Friends University. She worked as an executive secretary for Kansas State University, the United States Army Discharge Station in Tacoma, Washington, KSN TV in Wichita, Kansas, and Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kansas. She also attended Pratt Community College.
Barbara was a member of the DUO Sunday School Class at Trinity United Methodist Church in Hutchinson, Kansas; the Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary board for 16 years; the Reno County Food Bank board; and the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Board of Directors. In addition, Barbara served as president of the Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary board for four years.
